Pay Per PostThe recent Page Rank update by Google on October 2007 sent waves of mixed reactions in both the blogging world and advertisers as well. The first thing that you’ll notice from paid posts is that advertisers don’t want you use the word ‘sponsored’ anymore in the post. Use it – you won’t get any job from them.

Secondly, there has been a noticeable change in Page Ranks (you can read my recent article about PR here). I’ve read in forums that someone lost ranks on 6 of their sites. 3 were justifiable as it was full of sponsored posts while the other 3 sites were somewhat mysterious. On the other hand, new sites have yet to receive any PR – where the second mystery kicks in. It seems that Google wants to penalize sites who sell their PR which indirectly would influence the advertiser’s ranking when it comes to Google search.

A friend of mine listed a few ‘unofficial’ criteria which would get you ban or at least a demotion of PR from Google:

1. Use the word ‘sponsored’
2. Sell links on your site – those that you put site wide. This includes exchanging links with another site
3. Over linking your site to other ‘non-quality’ sites
4. Clogging your site with advertisements which makes it look like a spam site
5. Asking other people to set proper ‘anchor text’ when linking back to your site where it becomes lethal if you have hundreds or thousands of these sites linking to yours in a day

I wonder what would happen to the paid blogging industry with Google’s new move. By dropping the ‘sponsored’ word is just a temporary solution. All together I believe that it’s really unnecessary to put any indication that the post is sponsored because usually sponsored posts are written in a way which would blend in nicely to the blog’s content as well as the writer’s personal experience.

Let’s see what happens next on the next PR update.
