How to Put Multiple Domains on a Single Hosting Account on GoDaddy and Still Point to the Root PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 21 June 2007
Domain AliasDigg ButtonIt struck my mind the other day – how to put multiple domains on GoDaddy. I have successfully purchased and aliased multiple domains on a single account – saving costs on web hosting fees. I noticed that a lot of people aren’t aware of this – most of the time you will see that when you enter their domain name, it will automatically forward it to a subdomain, namely ‘/blog’ or something like that. Try entering ‘http://dotmyspot.com’ you will see that it does auto forward to ‘/home’.

If you do intend to host your site on GoDaddy with high possibility that you will have multiple domains, I would recommend that you purchase GoDaddy’s Deluxe or Premium Plan. You can’t do this on the Economy plan.

By subscribing to their Deluxe or Premium Plan, you are entitled to host multiple websites or domain names on a single web hosting account – not to mention you can create an unlimited number of subdomain names. However, please take note that the hosting account only allows you to have 25 MySQL database for Deluxe and 50 for the Premium Plan – which means that you can only install 25 or 50 free applications on their web server.

Here’s a guideline on how you can put multiple domains on a single web hosting account and still pointing to the root directory.

1. Purchase you domain name and assign it to your web hosting account. Go to ‘Hosting & Servers’ and then ‘My Hosting Account’.
2. Select the hosting account that you want your domain name to be assigned to by clicking on ‘open’.
3. In the ‘Hosting Control Panel’ go to ‘Settings’ and then ‘Domain Management’.
4. At the top panel you will see ‘Assign Domain to Hosting Site’. Select from the drop down list the newly purchased domain name or simply type it on the input box.
5. In the ‘Domain Hosting Path’ enter a folder or the subdomain name that you want the domain name that you purchased to be its root folder.

IE,
Domain: www.yourdomain.com
Domain Hosting Path: /subdomainname

6. Click on ‘Add Domain’ and the newly purchased domain name and the new subfolder would be created. Give it 3 to 5 minutes or so.

When you type http://www.yourdomain.com, it will be forwarded at the backend to the appropriate subfolder – but you won’t see it appearing like this – www.yourdomain.com/subdomainname, just www.yourdomain.com.

If you like my article and thinking of purchasing a Deluxe or Premium Plan do visit GoDaddy's website to find out more information. Read more about Digg Button
