ARM-based microprocessors have made headlines recently, as numerous electronics like Apple devices, and other tablets are now powered by ARM microprocessors. Surely, the ARM hype has caught Dell’s attention, in which Dell mentioned that they are in the midst of deploying their ARM-based Copper server, which would enter its initial test phase.
Basically, the Copper platform is a low-power consumption microchip when compared to existing x86 servers. Apparently, Dell thinks that the energy-saving benefits would be perfect for energy-intensive platforms like the Hadoop. Also, Dell is confident that the Copper is an extremely cost-effective option, and it also performs flawlessly when used in light workloads. Apparently, Dell wants to further expand their reach in the ARM system platform, whereby they are appealing to the open source software to jointly develop the platform that would particularly run on the Linux operating system.
